I’m xp power user and php-mysql developer. Trying to switch linux (learning it professionally without going to any institution).
Tried centos, though it is great but I didn’t really like it. Could you please advise another distribution, which I feel interest.

If you want one easy to use and install get SUSE. If you want the best, get Fedora. But I recommend SUSE and then upgrading to Fedora once you are comfortable with SUSE. Good luck!
Ubuntu’s been the winner for years.
Centos is crap along with all the redhat derivatives on account of the rpm based packaging system. I find it’s a real pain to run yum.
Ubuntu’s main draw is apt-get and its gui frontend, synaptic. It’s the easiest way i know to find, download and install a whole mess of software all at once. apt-get update will update repositories, apt-get upgrade will upgrade all of your installed software, including the kernel.
Plus it ‘just works’, plus it comes in a great deal of languages, plus it comes on just one CD, i remember the agony of one disc in a 5 disc suse install going bad…
I honestly can’t think of any others. I cant even recommend ubuntu derivatives like linux mint.
If you want a distro full of server-ish things, use PCLinuxOS Business Edition (http://www.pclosbe.org/index.html. If you want a good distro that’s also fun – and has a great support community – use Ubuntu.
I’d recommend using a Debian-based OS, due to its stability and reliability. I’ve been using Slackware (Non-Debian) for a few years, and I’ve not once had an issue with it.
Since you’re still learning, it would probably be best to use something like Ubuntu or OpenSUSE. Just don’t start with Slackware, Fedora, or OpenSolaris; as they are more difficult to use than the two previously mentioned.
ubuntu if your new to linux, gentoo or slackware if your an expert.
Get the PCLinuxOS 2009-1 LiveCD and check it out. It has programs to run a Linux System as a gaming computer, called OnPlay in the synaptic program manager..
There are many that you could choose. The selection tool may help narrow down the possibilities.
Good luck
