I very much like Linux and am very new to Windows 7 Professional OS (that’s the reason for all the Windows 7 Professional questions on here, which I do appreciate everyone’s helpful responses). Can you recommend a Linux OS that would complement Windows 7 Professional OS? A computer technician friend recommend Ubuntu. Ubuntu is definitely the way to go. I have it and it’s great speed wise. Use Wubi Installer, and it’s really easy too. Then if you need to uninstall it, just go into Windows 7/ Programs and features, and uninstall it.

I suggest Ubuntu. Most linux distributions support every language through NLS(Native Language Support). So the call is really up to you on which to use.

A distro that comes on a DVD, not a CD (you get more packages that way) and one that has compiled packages, not some thing that you have to build each package from scratch.

Linux Format and Linux Magazine (out of the UK, not the US mag by the same name) both provide DVDs that mean that criteria.

You can get Ubuntu, Mandriva, Suse, and other such distros like that. Just avoid multi-distro DVDs which have smaller, less complete versions since you won’t be able to get online to add or upgrade packages.

I am looking to install Linux on my laptop (Dell Inspiron E1705). During installation I was asked if I wanted to install it under Windows or as a stand alone. I have partitioned my hard drive so the installation as a standalone is no problem, but this is my first time attempting to work with Linux. .

Are there any other issues I might have to face, and if so what is the best way to deal with them???

Since you already have Windows, that’s good (if you wanted to keep it). The only hard part will be identifying the new partition you want to put Linux, which is really 2-partitions, Linux wanting a swap partition. So, fire up LiveCD and use the DiskPartition to look at the partitions. Make darn sure you know which is Windows. Quit, click the Install Ubuntu icon. In less than a half hour you will have a dual boot machine. When you go Linux, Ubuntu will want to upgrade parts of the Linux.

And, u know, after a while, I formatted the whole drive, made a new 40 meg partition and made a single-boot. Never use the whole hard drive, because it forever and a day to scan the drive for file inventory.

There isn’t anything better than RedHat. Please do not listen to the Ubuntu fanboys out there. It’s a sub-par flavor of linux. If you’re wanting to learn so you have experience for work then you probably wont want to use a distro based on debian. Stick with RedHat and learn the korn shell. Every data center I’ve worked in has always used ksh, from AIX to linux. For home use I have Fedora which is based on RedHat.
