My biggest qualm with Linux right now (if any) is that my parents are still stuck without an Internet connection. So if I want to add Linux-based software I have to perform a miracle by downloading not only the package I want but every package it depends on too… right?

Is there something I’m missing that’ll tell me what to get regardless, from another computer, so i don’t have to worry about the process?

You’ll still have to grab all the dependencies separately, but you can download the software offline. Linux programs take one of 3 forms: Debian packages (used in Debian and Debian-based distributions like Ubuntu), Red Hat packages (used in Fedora, CentOS, and so on), and tarballs. With Ubuntu and Debian at least, each maintains an online version of the repository (at http://packages.ubuntu.com and http://packages.debian.org respectively) that let you download the .deb packages manually and bring them over to your parents house. The package pages also include links to those package’s dependencies, but there’s a good chance that many of those packages are already installed.

Alternatively, I suppose if you have a phone with a data plan, you could tether the phone.

Give a easy to follow detailed/descriptive step by step procedure on how to dual boot on a windows computer between vista and linux operating systems. Also if you know how, (and i know it’s possible because i’ve seen youtube videos) tell how you can get OS X on vista and maybe do a triple boot between the three operating systems.

To dual boot vista and linux, you have 3 options

1) if you have vista installed, just turn the computer off and put the linux disk in, and boot up from the cd. It is pretty straight foreward once you get into the CD. It has a partition manager in it so it will make two partitions.

2) If you have vista installed, boot into vista and put the linux disk in. It will have an option to “install insided windows”. Follow the instructions from there.

3) If you have linux installed, you will have to download a program called “gparted”. Burn that program to a cd and put it in your computer and make a new partition. (It is a live CD. Meaning that you will have to boot into it like you would the linux CD.) the cd will tell you how to do everything. BE PATIENT. After you make a new partion, memorize how big you made it, and put the vista CD in the computer and boot up from there. the choose to install vista on the partion that you just made.

As for the OSX on the computer, that is a very complicated process, as mac tried really hard to make sure you could only install the OS on their computers. You would have to find a reliable google source.

That is the one i recommend. Note that you can only do it if your computer has and intel processor.

Oh, and PS… It’s not called a “windows computer”. “windows” is the operating system. The correct term is a PC.

You can try parallels desktop which allows you to use multiple operating systems as an application that may help. I use it to run microsoft office on my mac.

The computer may be faulty so all the effort to load linux on it will be a waste of time.

If it has a CD/DVD drive on it, try booting with a bootable CD. Any will do, like an operating system CD.

A distro that comes on a DVD, not a CD (you get more packages that way) and one that has compiled packages, not some thing that you have to build each package from scratch.

Linux Format and Linux Magazine (out of the UK, not the US mag by the same name) both provide DVDs that mean that criteria.

You can get Ubuntu, Mandriva, Suse, and other such distros like that. Just avoid multi-distro DVDs which have smaller, less complete versions since you won’t be able to get online to add or upgrade packages.

It will be no problem if there is nothing wrong with you hardware. I us Ubuntu it install just like windows os, if you are luck you might be able to retrieve data from the crashed PC.

ok get a friend to go to linux.iso.com or linux.org and download the iso for you and burn it its about 3 cds or 1 dvd or you can actually order cd,s from the site
