So I’m just wondering: with default installation, does Fedora get installed with less standard packages/libraries than the Redhat Enterprise Linux? Is there an option of “full installation” that just installs all the most common packages for Fedora?

This is making me mad, not knowing what’s still lacking there. Please help! Thanks!

Are you compiling? In which case there should be a list, make sure to install the dev packages as well.

Otherwise you should be able to get most of it through the package manager. You can also pipe output into grep like this “ | grep error” to filter out everthing exect lines with an error message.

following are our core needs

i. We want stable OS as many projects will be using this server
as development server.

ii. This server will be maintained by our networking guys so they don’t have much knowledge of web administration

iii. Development is mainly LAMP based. We may need to have multiple instances of apache and php.

well i gusse the instability caused by hardware.
firstly make sure your server’s hardware is compatible with Redhat, to serve the clients why dont you go for Redhat Ent ?
that works fine, and you can get it free but if you need 24×7 support then you got to purchase.

I want something that’ll run games under WINE very well, and I want package management to be fast and easy.

Apparently Fedora and RedHat are very alike, but which one is faster and better for a desktop environment. I will be doing casual browsing and listening to music, alongside playing games under WINE.

Which one will be the fastest and most productive?

Actually I would recommend Linux mint 9 as it is a long term distro and my wife uses it as her main system. My home is pretty much M$ free aside from an ancient laptop that runs windoze 3.1 as a joke machine!

The following is a general config how-to for dataone (sorry I couldn’t find a specific one for Fedora):

“Here is a simple HOWTO for configuring BSNL DataOne on Linux. I assume you have your ethernet card configured, your ADSL modem plugged in and that your card is at eth1.

First assign an IP Address: By default, 192.168.1.1 is the interface address for the router. So you can assign any other IP. I use 192.168.1.100. If you use RedHat/Fedora, do ifconfig eth1 192.168.1.100.

Next, the gateway. On RedHat/Fedora you would do route add default gw 192.168.1.1

Now edit /etc/resolv.conf to configure the DNS server. Put this in:

nameserver 61.1.96.69
nameserver 61.1.96.71

That’s basically it. Restart your network and it should magically start working. Just in case it does not, use your favorite browser to surf to http://192.168.1.1/. Open up the WAN Settings page and check if the WAN type is PPP and connection type is PPPoE. Next ensure the username/password details are correct. The username is usually the first letter of your first name followed by your last name. So my username would be mesteves@dataone. Then type in your password and click Save. Then click Reboot. After a couple of minutes your connection should start working.

On Gentoo you can configure your network card by editing /etc/conf.d/net and adding/modifying the line for eth1 to look like:

iface_eth1 = “192.168.1.100 broadcast 192.168.1.255 netmask 255.255.255.0″
gateway=”eth1/192.168.1.1″

Save the file and do a /etc/init.d/net.eth1 restart and you should be ready to go! Once connected, surf here to check your Dataone service/usage records or change your password. Go here to check your DataOne Webmail.”

Don’t use the live CD method. Burn the cd set from one of the spins or use the network cd method.
You will need to find a server with the distribution tree for the release you chose.

Try the fedora forums for help first.
