first off if its using the .doc extension you can use openoffice to
open it if its using the newer file one with the x in in it such as docx then you wont be able to goto http://www.openoffice.org to get openoffice also known as OOo

I’m trying to emulate flash memory for a flash file system, using the disk file as the actual storage. The file will be arbitrarily large (eventually in the TiB range).

Your question is over my head if you trying to write your own device driver. Though I had trouble following every part of your question, it sounds like what you need is to mount a a file system to a file. You can make a file that is a virtual block device with the “dd” command, and format it into whatever filesystem you want with the regular mkfs tools. Then you can mount it with a command like “mount imagefile /media/mountpoint -o loop”

let your PC detect the brand of the sound card and video card that were installed in your PC and install the drivers for the devices:

I saw one time where someone booted Linux on their laptop, but it WOULD NOT boot without the flash drive containing a particular configuration file inserted. Basically, the file/flash drive gave Linux the “OK” to continue booting.

How do I create this situation with my computer? I use Knoppix 6.2.

Most likely, there is something in his /boot/grub/grub.conf file which specifies his flash drive (presumably /dev/sdb but check your own to find out) as the root directory. I would read info grub for more information. Here is a manual page:

Of course that’s only a guess but it should work.
