I am new to linux (just installed ubuntu 8.04) and I need GNU-make in order to install an application. How do I check if it (or any other application) is installed ?
I don’t know how the app is named exactly.

Till yesterday, it was working fine, but today when i started my database by ” sqlplus ‘/as sysdba’ ; i got this error.

can somebody help me in this regard.

Your ORACLE_SID may not be set correctly, or your may machine may have rebooted and your database was not automatically started. At the command line, as an oracle user do:
$ echo $ORACLE_SID
$ps -ef|grep pmon
$ who -b

a – will tell you if your sid is set correctly (or at all)
b – will tell you if your database appears to be up and running
c – will tell you if your machine rebooted recently

If machine reboots are taking your database down, you may wish to create/modify the scripting that will allow the database to start automatically (or you may just need to change you oratab file for this database).

let your PC detect the brand of the sound card and video card that were installed in your PC and install the drivers for the devices:

This is for a school project, and I can’t find any pages that tell how to network a Suse to other computers except how to use a printer.

Hi,
Irrespective of the distro you are using, by just setting a IP address to both these systems, you can network them. For simplicity ni accessing, you can add the names of both these systems in the /etc/hosts file of the other system. If you want to access the contents of one system from the other, you need to do a NFS mount. For this you need to configure one as the NFS server and the other as the NFS client.
For setting the IP address, you can either choose the network-admin GUI, or the interface file which will be somewhere(depends on the distribution) in the /etc folder.

Use your windows XP installation CD to enter the installation prompt and delete one of the partitions.

Restart and use your RedHat CD to install Linux.
(Never used RedHat, so that’s as far as I can take you. – Hopefully it’s as user-friendly as Ubuntu.)

if you asking for the command line tool for red hat it’s called rpm so just try this command.

rpm –help

to see the options.

you can only do it if you already have more than one partition each operating system needs its own partition of the hard drive to be installed into. or you can get a 2nd hard drive and partition it and install xp and vista on that one cause you can dual boot with 2 hard drives as long as you partition the drive first.

I originally had Windows 7, then due to a registry error, it messed up and wouldn’t boot again. I used the Mandriva Linux install disc to format the hard drive but now when I boot the computer with the Windows 7 install disc, it does not acknowledge the disc (even though it is set to read the disc from the BIOS). It simply continues straight to the Linux OS. It is not a disc issue either as I have back-ups.

On some computers you get a message when you try to boot from a cd to “Press any key to boot from cd”. Watch for that message and press a key to boot from the win 7 cd.
