I have created a separate partition for installing Linux using Partitionmagic. The message that I get while attempting to install Linux is “no valid partion exists”.
I have created a separate partition for installing Linux using Partitionmagic. The message that I get while attempting to install Linux is “no valid partion exists”.

the partition i have created is ext2 which linux does support
i have already created three logical partitions for root, boot and swap as required by linux (red hat 9.0)
But ,all three are in extended partition-would that creat a problem?
Should i create another primary partition?

You need to install and possibly compile the kernel modules for the correct video driver. Nvidia cards are particularly prone to this issue.

In Ubuntu, at a terminal type:

sudo adept -install nvidia

If asked say Y to questions.

For redhat

su
then
yum -install nvidia

If those don’t do the trick visit the forums for Ubuntu or Fedora and search for “NAME OF YOUR VID CARD” + X server fails
