I have 40 computers here at school. Im planning to install a master unit with both Win XP and Fedora Linux. There are no problems cloning a xp-based partition. Im just curious where I can do it on a fedora linux installation under a separate parition and clone it to a new pc. All computers mentioned have the same specifications.

should be able to if u are using norton ghost ver. 10 and above.
here’s the one for the lastest version, norton ghost ver. 14.0
under system requirements

I am running Linux (ubuntu) on its own partition. I have the windows partition mounted and can read and copy files from it. However, it is read-only. I want to be able to modify files in it and copy files into it.

What open-source software is there for ubuntu linux that will do this? How do I install it and make it work so that the NTFS partition is editable and mounted?

I’ve been looking at the Ubuntu Linux site for a while, they tell you how to partition a drive, but not how to set it up for two HD’s with a choice of which to boot on startup.

I know I could have the BIOS always pop up on powerup, but is there an easier way?

I have two hard drives. When booting up I select “Setup” to enter the bios. I then select the hard drive with Linux as the boot drive. When I am done, I reboot and then enter Setup and reselect the hard drive with windows to boot regular.

Reformat the hard drive again and this time, partition it once and partition all of it at once for the Linux partition. That will eliminate Windows 7 from the computer.

I installed OpenSuse Linux 11.1 on my hard drive, and the installer set aside a large chunk of the hard drive for windows. After installing linux and restarting, windows was no longer a boot option (under grub). Also, the partition for windows was no longer readable. I tried to recover the data using data recovery software without any luck. From another windows machine the recovery software says that it cannot read the data.

What data recovery software are you using?

Try Photorec (it can be used in Windows or Linux), and it recovers a lot of document types (despite its name implying only photographs) and doesn’t need a working partition table.

when you are installing it, you should make it about half of your other operating system (if you have one) and for the swap thing just put “/”

I have a full windows partition that has all of my important files. Is it possible to install Linux on this hard drive without reformatting my data?

I tried using KNOPPIX, but I was unable to open any data from my C drive with it. I couldn’t delete files either. I have reason to believe that Linux could come in handy in the event of a trojan attack. The way I see it is I could boot to linux and delete the infected files but with KNOPPIX that doesn’t seem possible.

So a CD distro is probably out of the question. Is there any other way to use linux on a computer w/ a full NTFS partition?
btw, I don’t have any viruses right now. That idea just came to mind when I was looking at KNOPPIX
I have a program called Partition Magic? Can I use this?

Back up all your data into some other drive and then put in your linux CD. The setup will have options to setup partitions and format your hard disk. Just follow those instructions and create the linux partition you want and your Windows partition. Then install Linux into your newly created partition. After that you can just put a Windows disc and install windows into the other partition. After that just use any program like EasyBCD to edit the Windows boot menu to add the Linux install also into the list. Hope it helps.

The swap partition is just like virtual memory(Paging Files)in XP or some space which is needed twice the size of physical memory or RAM. this space is used by linux to store files when your RAM is loaded fully. you can create this partition during installation of linux by simply selecting the space on your hard disk and select /swap from the drop down box.
