Either. If you look at the BSDs, OpenBSD (who pride themselves on security) use blowfish (created by Bruce Schneier). FreeBSD uses MD5.

Both work well but I’d go with BlowFish since I mostly use OpenBSD.

Question by Horses Dong: How to change the Linux password to nothing?
Every brand of Linux asks me for a password. I need it to either stop, or let me put it blank.

Thanks so much in advance.
Thanks for all the opinions. What I need is a way not to enter a password.

That is not possible in Linux. You always have to have a password for root and any other accounts. Usually the password has to be atleast 6 charachters long.
