I have a project for my school that I have to install Linux Somba Server on two computers and then connect them creating a network. I have set up the computers (Connected the power, mainframe, keyboards, mice, and monitors). I am about to install Linux on the two computers. Are there any configurations that should be done during the setup?

That depends on which Linux distribution you’re using, but most will set Samba up for you right out of the box.

You want a LiveCD.

Knoppix is a better choice, it is designed to run from a CD or DVD (there are 2 versions, the DVD has a huge number of programs that run from the DVD).

its has several .xxx options…. like .tar, .gx , .rpm ,.bz2 .deb. im using kubuntu linux 8.10 and when i try to install using wine it tells me to enter the proxy. whats a proxy and what do i enter when it asks?

A proxy server is a server that services the requests of its clients by forwarding requests to other servers. You would need to know the address of the proxy server.

Being an MS Lan Admin, mastering MSSQL will make you more specialized in managing Microsoft solutions. You may get more mileage from mastering Exchange server and Active Directory.

Learning Redhat will make you more well-rounded in the sense that it’s a non-MS solution.

It’s really a toss-up. Being MS-centric will make you more marketable to companies that deploy a Microsoft solution. If you haven’t already, you should consider Microsoft certifications.

Where to start?

Download a virtual machine, download a Win XP install disk, mount it on the virtual machine, install it, and then use the installed Win XP.

when you are installing it, you should make it about half of your other operating system (if you have one) and for the swap thing just put “/”
