I really like linux except for most of the programs i use won’t work on it. Is there a linux version that will run Yahoo messenger 10, Itunes 9, Frostwire and google chrome? I really don’t like pidgin because of the way i use messenger. I have had very little luck with wine.

I have been using Ubuntu for awhile on my laptop, but I’m a linguist and I need to use multiple keyboard layouts; however, Ubuntu only allows you to assign four different layouts at one time. I am really fond of Linux products and don’t intend to go back to Windows any time soon, so I was wondering if there was another form of Linux that would solve this problem for me, because I need 7-8 different layouts.

We use Mandriva and Suse and from our understanding you can assign many keyboards layout provided you install or dowload libraries

Nice, I did the exact same thing. My dad knows a ton about computers and he gave me the book called Unix system administration handbook by Evi Nemeth, Garth Snyder, Scott Seebass, and Trent R. Hein. I have been reading others online as well. The one I just mentioned is really good and friendly. One thing to note though is that they take time to read, unless you already know a butload. There is tons and tons of information.

Ubuntu is a different distro of Linux. There are lots of different versions of them. Linux Ubuntu is a free version and one of my favorites. Ubuntu and PC Linux OS are my favorites.

Red had and Ubuntu are both Linux, just different versions, and are very much different.

I like the function in windows 7 that lets you lock the computer when you’re away and prevents others from accessing the computer without your permission. Unfortunately, due to my nosy little brother, I need this. Does Linux Ubuntu have something like this?

Yes.

One way is to set the computer to lock when the screensaver turns on.

Goto: System -> Preferences -> Screensaver

Check the box titled “Lock Screen When Screensaver Active”

Ubuntu is free vertion of linux its different from red hat in the sence that it was modiied my redhat and its not a freeware so u get support from redhat unlike the GNU u sign when u install ubuntu. They both look and feel a little different

it is possible to download/install linux onto a 4 gig flash drive flash drive if you have ubuntu 9.4 installed on your system then you can make a flash drive boot up system

I am about to test and see if I can make a multi boot flash drive, it is going to be an interesting experiment mulitl booting from a flash drive
