its has several .xxx options…. like .tar, .gx , .rpm ,.bz2 .deb. im using kubuntu linux 8.10 and when i try to install using wine it tells me to enter the proxy. whats a proxy and what do i enter when it asks?

A proxy server is a server that services the requests of its clients by forwarding requests to other servers. You would need to know the address of the proxy server.

How to know the Oracle client version on a linux box?

also how can i find all the system configuration over a linux box (like is it 64 bit OS or 32 bit, whats the web server installed, what is the Redhat version etc etc.)

open your synaptic or what ever RH uses and select all installed software and click on the package collum and they’ll be organized alphabetically

Im a newcomer. I just want to mess around with linux and learn it. I play alot of videogames, and I have a small home network. Im only confused by all the different versions of linux. There isn’t anything better than RedHat. Please do not listen to the Ubuntu fanboys out there. It’s a sub-par flavor of linux. If you’re wanting to learn so you have experience for work then you probably wont want to use a distro based on debian. Stick with RedHat and learn the korn shell. Every data center I’ve worked in has always used ksh, from AIX to linux. For home use I have Fedora which is based on RedHat.

Mandrake Linux is the best. I have Mandrake Linux 10.1 installed on my PC along with Vista ultimate, and Server 2008 beta 3. But Mandrake Linux is the best of them all, in my opinion!
